Most often played one on one these are games of strategy and skill. Players build collections of miniatures from which they put together armies to face each other. Games are played on large tables with buildings, forests, hills and other such scenery to create a cinematic battlefield.
The hobby aspects of making and painting the miniatures are for many people just as engaging if not more so than the game itself.
This is a wide category of games that usually involves moving play pieces or cards around a pre-marked board or playing surface. They are often played by larger groups of friends, either in a race to win or playing together as a team to solve a mystery or prevent disaster
Games can range from established family favourites like Cluedo, to immersive adventures like Gloomhaven or the empire building sci-fi Twilight Imperium.
These are cooperative story telling games where players takes on the role of an imaginary character, joining with their comrades to undertake quests in a world created by a Games Master.
In contrast to miniature based board games the action takes place mainly in the imagination. The Games Master describes the scene and players act out the roles of their characters... imagine an adventure story where you write the script for your character!
